Some Statistics to think about!

The English National Health Service:

Employs 1.33 million people (2005)

Spends 98.7 Billion Pounds per year (2008)

And the population of England is 52 million.

The English NHS is the 5th largest employer in the WORLD!!! After:

The Chinese Army

The Indian Railways

Wal-Mart

and the U. S. Department of Defense

The United States Population is above 300 million today - 6 TIMES LARGER THAN ENGLAND!

Still think we should rush this entree to a "U.S. National Health Service" through this fall? Only if you want the power it will create!

98.7 billion pounds is about $150 billion US Dollars. If the UK's population is 52 million, this is about US$2900 per person. The combined health care spending in the US (gov+private)was $2.241 TRILLION in 2007. Now, we have about 300 million people in the US, so in 2007 we were spending US$7470 per person - more than 2.5 times what the US spends per person (and failing to provide any care to a considerable number of people).

Mull that over.

I'll that a US National Health Service over what we have.

That should read: "I'll **take** a US National Health Service over what we have."

And it should read "more than 2.5 times what the **UK** spends per person . . ."

Anonymous,

The point of the post was not the amount of money - it is widely known that England spends about 40%of the U.S. expenditures for healthcare. Your numbers seem to bear this out, although I am not sure the NHS expenditure and the source of your number are apples and apples - since we have no NHS our expenditures are not monitored in the same manner and I believe there are probably significant expenditures on healthcare in England outside of the NHS. But I am guessing. Anyway, on to what my point was:

THE ENGLAND NHS IS THE FIFTH LARGEST EMPLOYER IN THE WORLD!

IF YOU RATIO THE $$'S AND EMPLOYMENT ASSUMING EQUIVALENCY IN SERVICES IT MEANS THE U.S. WOULD HAVE

2.250 TRILLION $$'S PER YEAR(100 MILLION POUNDS TIMES 2.5 TIMES 6 - 6 TIMES THE POPULATION

AND

8 MILLION EMPLOYEES

It might be less than this due to efficiencies of volume, but the numbers are STAGGERING!!!

Does this give you any pause at all?
