MORE FOOD FOR THOUGHT
See my April 26 post "Food for Thought" noting a column by Dick Meyer regarding Isaiah Berlins' views of "positive" liberty an "negative" liberty. This column helps explain the concept, which I am still having difficulty getting my mind around.
- "Pluralism, tolerance and skepticism are the intellectual and attitudinal virtues that nourish an appreciation of Berlin's negative liberty deep enough to vanquish the need for consistent answers to life's odd quandaries with a Big Theory."
This appears to me to be the heart of his view. Is this Libertarianism? Is that word contradictory - with the "-ism" - to the concept? I should say "Is this Libertarian?"
I'll have to read Isaiah Berlin!
