John Cassidy writes an interesting economical analysis of the 2008/2009 recession in the New Yorker - "Rational Irrationality" - I like the title! He has an interesting point, but one I would have a few questions for him to resolve. Let me know if you agree with him!

Thomas Edsall writes "Rich Dem, Poor Dem" for The New Republic, pointing out potential problems for BHO strategy to date of "class warfare". He thinks it may lead to major problems. Important for all Dems out there to read and contemplate for their parties future.

Where have the war caskets gone?

One of the MSM's favorite targets during W's tenure over the Iraq and Afgahanistan wars was the Pentagon rule allowing no coverage of returning war dead in their flag draped caskets. A quite reasonable ruling for anyone who watched the antics of the left during Vietnam.

In April, BHO lifted this rule, re-enforcing his open administration, I would assume. Why could he afford to take this chance of a possible negative public reaction?

Byron York documents this further confirmation of the MSM complicity with the BHO administration by covering up exactly what they begged to expose during W's term "for the good of the country."

This quote from Biden in 2004 is precious:

"Defense Secretary Robert Gates says trying to close down the detention center at Guantanamo Bay has proved more complicated than anticipated.

Gates says "it's going to be tough" for the president to meet his goal of shutting the prison in January. There are difficulties in completing the lengthy review of detainee files and resolving other issues.

Gates says even before Obama took office, he was arguing for a firm deadline to close the facility. Gates says that's the only way to get the Washington bureaucracy moving.

But Gates says he doesn't think it's a problem to push back the date _ as long as there's a good plan showing progress toward closing it. He says he doesn't know whether the deadline will need to be extended.

Gates spoke on CNN's "State of the Union" and ABC's "This Week.""

If you're young enough to have read those "Where's Waldo?" books as a kid, you are well-prepared to read the New York Times. On Wednesday the Times finally took note of the NEA scandal, in a story of slightly over 350 words that appeared on page 21:


The White House on Tuesday instructed government agencies to keep politics away from the awarding of federal grants, a step taken as the administration sought to minimize the fallout after an official at the National Endowment for the Arts urged artists to advance President Obama's agenda.

The new guidelines were issued at a meeting between White House officials and chiefs of staff across the executive branch, following the disclosure of a conference call last month in which artists were asked to work with the Corporation for Public Service to promote Mr. Obama's health care, education and environmental proposals.


This is the first time the paper has mentioned the scandal, first reported 29 days earlier on Andrew Breitbart's Big Hollywood and 22 days earlier by Fox News Channel's Glenn Beck.
This follows the same pattern as the Times's coverage of the Van Jones and Acorn scandals, both of which the paper did not mention at all until the Obama administration had taken some remedial action, and then reported only in brief stories on inside pages (though in fairness, a full-length front-page story about Jones's hypovehiculation appeared on the second day).

Trying to find information about the Obama scandals in the Times can be a fun challenge, just like the "Where's Waldo?" books. But if your taste in puzzles runs more to crosswords or sudoku and you want the news delivered straight, there are plenty of better sources."

David Broder Analyzes the "Policy Approach"

In "Mr. Policy Hits a Wall" David Broder analyzes an article by William Schambra, a policy analyst, which I find quite interesting. Mr. Schambra's view:


"Schambra, like many others, was struck by the "sheer ambition" of Obama's legislative agenda and by his penchant for centralizing authority under a strong White House staff replete with many issue "czars."

Schambra sees this as evidence that "Obama is emphatically a 'policy approach' president. For him, governing means not just addressing discrete challenges as they arise, but formulating comprehensive policies aimed at giving large social systems -- and indeed society itself -- more rational and coherent forms and functions. In this view, the long-term, systemic problems of health care, education, and the environment cannot be solved in small pieces. They must be taken on in whole.""


This sounds like Totalitarianism to me! Things must change incrementally, or it IS totalitarianism!


Why won't it work for our society? His theory:


"Historically, that approach has not worked. The progressives failed to gain more than brief ascendancy and the Carter and Clinton presidencies were marked by striking policy failures. The reason, Schambra says, is that this highly rational, comprehensive approach fits uncomfortably with the Constitution, which apportions power among so many different players, most of whom are far more concerned with the particulars of policy than its overall coherence."


I disagree with his use of the term "highly rational" as their are many "highly rational" approaches to policy - progressive, libertarian, conservative, et al - each of who's proponents think their approach is "highly rational". So each four years we would have perhaps a new "totalitarian" approach which would lead to chaos!

I do not think it will work this time. An interesting read!

TORT REFORM: No need for "demonstration projects" Mr. President! #2

This WSJ article explains how Missouri is also a completed "demonstration project"!

Could someone please explain: Is this administration just ignorant of the necessity for Tort Reform or are they so "bought" by the trial lawyers that they can't be rational?

A summary of Missouri's results:


"Tort reform works. Missouri's medical malpractice claims are now at a 30-year low. Average payouts are about $50,000 below the 2005 average. Malpractice insurers are also turning a profit for the fifth year in a row—allowing other insurers to compete for business in Missouri. This will drive down costs, which will save government programs money as well as improve the system for patients. It will also leave doctors with more resources to invest in better care."

Haley Barbour has done a great job! Maybe the Dems should look at his results! His final paragraph:

Economic growth is promoted by entrepreneurs and innovators, whose ambitions, when realized, create inequality. No one with any knowledge of human nature can expect such people not to want to be relatively rich, and if they are too long frustrated they will cease to be productive. Nor can the state substitute for them, because the state simply cannot engage in the "creative destruction" that is an essential aspect of innovation. Krauthammer understands BHO: Read this if you want to!

Charles Krauthammer comments on BHO's techniques of obfuscating - which Joe Wilson interprets as lies, as do I - and predicts trouble ahead for the "righteous redeemer."

A quite interesting read giving three solid examples from the BHO speech which Joe Wilson interrupted.

The close of the article:



"Obama doesn't lie. He merely elides, gliding from one dubious assertion to another. This has been the story throughout his whole health care crusade. Its original premise was that our current financial crisis was rooted in neglect of three things -- energy, education and health care. That transparent attempt to exploit Emanuel's Law -- a crisis is a terrible thing to waste -- failed for health care because no one is stupid enough to believe that the 2008 financial collapse was caused by a lack of universal health care.

Note the word "elides": it was a new one to me! It has been a good day, I learned something new!

"No, It's Not About Race"

David Brooks, the NYT's resident "conservative" columnist - I bracket "conservative" due to his disenchantment with W and enchantment with BHO over the last year - writes an interesting anecdotal column on why he has concluded race is not an issue with resistance to BHO's proposals.

His conclusion is right on:


"What we’re seeing is the latest iteration of that populist tendency and the militant progressive reaction to it. We now have a populist news media that exaggerates the importance of the Van Jones and Acorn stories to prove the elites are decadent and un-American, and we have a progressive news media that exaggerates stories like the Joe Wilson shout and the opposition to the Obama schools speech to show that small-town folks are dumb wackos.

“One could argue that this country is on the verge of a crisis of legitimacy,” the economic blogger Arnold Kling writes. “The progressive elite is starting to dismiss rural white America as illegitimate, and vice versa.”

It’s not race. It’s another type of conflict, equally deep and old."

Unintended consequences? He says "We are about to destroy the environment in the name of saving it." Any merit to the comment? Have you thought it through?

In my home state of Tennessee, we just celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Yet there are serious proposals by energy developers to cover mountains all along the Appalachian chain, from Maine to Georgia, with 50-story wind turbines because the wind blows strongest across mountaintops.

Let's put this into perspective: We could line 300 miles of mountaintops from Chattanooga, Tenn., to Bristol, Va., with wind turbines and still produce only one-quarter the electricity we get from one reactor on one square mile at the Tennessee Valley Authority's Watts Bar Nuclear Plant."

UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES!! IBD finds that 45% of Doctors might quit if HealthFare is passed!

Investors Business Daily explains the results of their IBD/TIPP Poll which indicated that as many as 45% of all physicians in the U.S. would either quit or take early retirement if the current proposed plans are implemented.

Now I try not to be a conspiracy theorist, but think about this section of the article:


"• Two-thirds, or 65%, of doctors say they oppose the proposed government expansion plan. This contradicts the administration's claims that doctors are part of an "unprecedented coalition" supporting a medical overhaul.

It also differs with findings of a poll released Monday by National Public Radio that suggests a "majority of physicians want public and private insurance options," and clashes with media reports such as Tuesday's front-page story in the Los Angeles Times with the headline "Doctors Go For Obama's Reform."

Nowhere in the Times story does it say doctors as a whole back the overhaul. It says only that the AMA — the "association representing the nation's physicians" and what "many still regard as the country's premier lobbying force" — is "lobbying and advertising to win public support for President Obama's sweeping plan."

The AMA, in fact, represents approximately 18% of physicians and has been hit with a number of defections by members opposed to the AMA's support of Democrats' proposed health care overhaul."


It appears to me to be a BHO Administration/Ostrich Media/AMA "inadvertant conspiracy" at a minimum.

And the Los Angeles Times statement is a lie. An association representing 18% of a given population is not an "association representing the nation's physicians"!

"10 for 2010" - The 2010 Contract for America

Laura Ingraham creates "10 for 2010", a plan for our country that all conservatives should support. Will it have the impact of Gingrich's "Contract for America"? We'll see!

A couple of examples I feel strongly about:


"4) King Dollar. Preserve a strong dollar so that americans' savings aren't wiped out by inflation and the U.S. dollar remains the world's reserve currency."

and

"9) Restore America's System of Justice. Introduce British-style penalties for frivoulous lawsuits, where those who launch unsuccessful lawsuits are liable for the defendants' legal bills."

The dog looked down into the water and saw his reflection. He thought it was another dog with a bone in his mouth-- and it seemed to him that the other dog's bone was bigger than his. "Death Panel" is appropriate description, despite BHO's deception!

Read this column on the British System, then tell me Sarah Palin was off base using the term "Death Panel"! The elderly should be afraid. The very young should be afraid.


"The medical guidelines for Health Service hospitals state that babies should not be given intensive care if they are born at less than 23 weeks.

The guidelines were drawn up by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics and are not compulsory. They advise doctors that medical intervention for very premature children is not in the best interests of the baby and is not “standard practice.”


This is where Single Payer will take us and ObamaCare is designed to take us to Single Payer!

If you don't see this, your ideology is stopping your reasoning!

BHO HealthFare SILLINESS!

"Speaking of which, Obama spent a lot of time in his speech last night demonizing insurance companies as cruel and money-hungry, while also calling for a law mandating the purchase of their product. Politicians have said similar things about, say, the tobacco industry. But so far as we know, no one has ever proposed forcing every American to smoke two packs a day."


Do you see how ridiculous this is? Or maybe BHO knows the insurance companies will not exist if ObamaCare is implemented so mandating purchase of their product is academic.

Either way it is SILLY! Can someone defend this?

Hugh Hewitt summarizes BHO's Healthfare extravaganza!

Hugh Hewitt's column "We Will Call You Out!" clearly explains the shortcomings in his speech last night. A good summary of what was missed.


"The problem with the president's speech, and it is a very, very big problem, is that to be believed it would require a huge amount of trust in the president. The sort of trust that could only have been earned by a fair accounting of the critics' many and serious objections."

And that accounting was exactly what wasn't in the president's speech.

President Obama took a predictable whack at "death panels," but in so doing he dismissed every other objection raised by every other critic."


I think it may have been the end of his Presidency. This is the new "third rail" in my opinion, and BHO is not only touching it - he is embracing it!

FANTASIES

Michael Barone opines on BHO's and the Left's fantasies re green jobs, healthcare, et al. Interesting comments:


"Obama's approach to health care legislation, unless he makes a major course correction in his speech to the joint session of Congress tonight, is of a piece with his hiring of Van Jones. By ceding the task of writing legislation to congressional Democratic leaders and committee chairmen, he has been following a "no enemies to the left" strategy."

and

"No-enemies-to-the-left and convenient fantasies may work in Chicago. They don't work so well when your constituency is the whole United States."


Read the column and see if you can find fault with his logic. How long can we let these fantasies lead our country?

"Reverand" Van "Wright" Jones is Gone!

Van Jones, the controversial "Green Jobs Czar" working for BHO resigned Saturday midnight (on the long Labor Day weedend - what a surprise!) saying:

"On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me,..."

Odd thing is, as you can see from this Byron York article, the MSM did not cover the story at all until this Friday, and then feebly!

"Coverage of the Jones controversy was a case study of some of the deep divisions within the media. Fox News' Glenn Beck devoted program after program to Jones' past, and a number of conservative blogs were responsible for finding some of Jones' most inflammatory statements. Yet even as the controversy grew -- and even after Jones himself apologized for some of his words -- several of the nation's top media outlets failed to report the story. As late as Friday, as the Jones matter began to boil over, it had not been reported at all in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the evening newscasts of ABC, CBS, and NBC. Although the Post and CBS went on to report the Jones story on Saturday, the Times did not inform its readers about the Jones matter until after Jones resigned."

Now it seems to me if in fact a "vicious smear campaign" was being waged, the MSM would have leapt to his defense to put those right wingers in their place. Logical?

Perhaps there was not a defense!

Someone please explain to me how you can depend on the MSM for your information when it is so clear they are all simply the BHO administration PROTECTORS? I would be embarrassed!

Krauthammer's View of BHO

In "Obama, The Mortal" Charles Krauthammer comments on the situation Obama has created for himself in the last 8 months. Key points:


"After a disastrous summer -- mistaking his mandate, believing his press, centralizing power, governing left, disdaining citizens for (of all things) organizing -- Obama is in trouble."

and

"For a man who only recently bred a cult, ordinariness is a great burden, and for his acolytes, a crushing disappointment. Obama has become a politician like others. And like other flailing presidents, he will try to salvage a cherished reform -- and his own standing -- with yet another prime-time speech."


An interesting read.

The WSJ editorializes on "The Michigan Example": - a state in terrible financial condition and with very high unemployment - wondering if the U.S. is headed down the same path.


The last paragraph:

"When Ms. Granholm [Governor] gave her state of the state address earlier this year, she crowed about the similarities between the Michigan and Obama Administration strategies of using tax subsidies to aid favored businesses. "President Obama's priorities are nearly identical to ours," she declared, and we can only hope the results won't be."


Let's hope she is wrong!

CLARITY - not OBAMAFUSCATION!

Karl Rove writes a column in the WSJ today - "Obama and the Perfect Political Storm" - where he most clearly explains the UNINSURED number:


"In addition, Mr. Obama is trying to overhaul health care without being able to tap into widespread public unhappiness. Nearly nine out of 10 Americans say they have coverage—and large majorities of them are happy with it. Of the 46 million uninsured, 9.7 million are not U.S. citizens; 17.6 million have annual incomes of more than $50,000; and 14 million already qualify for Medicaid or other programs. That leaves less than five million people truly uncovered out of a population of 307 million. Americans don't believe this problem—serious but correctable—justifies the radical shift Mr. Obama offers."


So lets turn our entire system upside down and spend trillions of extra dollars we don't have to cover 1.6% of the population?

We must get sensible!
